How Does an Ultrasound Work?

An Ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of the inside of the body. This is a safe and painless diagnostic study that requires no radiation at all. Ultrasound images are captured in real time. These real time images allow the doctors to make notes of abnormal movements and characteristics within the organs. Also, it allows for the investigation of proper blood flow throughout the body. Based on the area being imaged, fasting may be required before any diagnostic imaging is performed. Some of the internal organs that are usually studied through a Ultrasound test are:

  • The Liver
  • Gallbladder
  • Spleen
  • Pancreas
  • Heart / Blood Vessels
  • Kidneys
  • Bladder
  • Uterus and Ovaries
  • Thyroid Glands
  • Scrotum

Notes About Ultrasounds

Ultrasound procedures are usually a quick, painless and non-invasive process. These processes usually take about 30 minutes. During the procedure, a gel will be applied to the area being examined. This gel prevents the forming of air pockets which could interfere with the sound waves being used to examine the body. Situations where ultrasounds are not useful would be for scans related to bones or parts of the body that retain gas. These masses will block the sound waves from penetrating the body and images will not be clear. If you or a family member is concerned over finding a company that will conduct an Ultrasound, then look no further. The Hollywood Diagnostics Center located in South Florida will be able to help you with all Ultrasound procedures.
