An ultrasound
is a test that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of body tissues. When done in the right circumstances, an ultrasound can be used to diagnose problems such as aortic stenosis, deep vein thrombosis, arrhythmias, and valvular heart disease.
For aortic stenosis, an ultrasound can help detect the narrowing of the aorta (the body’s main blood vessel) before it becomes too severe. For example, if there is no echo signal within the ascending aorta, the portion of the aorta closest to the heart, then this could indicate that there is a chance that the aorta could become narrowed with time. One way to prevent this from happening is to have regular imaging scans such as ultrasound and echo tests every year or two to check for any changes in the aorta.
Deep vein thrombosis, DVT, is another problem that can be detected through an ultrasound image. DVT occurs when blood clots form in the deep veins in the legs which can then travel up the body towards the lungs and cause an embolism. An abnormal echo signal can indicate that there are blood clots present in one of your deep veins which can lead to DVT and therefore should be treated immediately by removing the clot with a special type of medication called anti-coagulation.
An ultrasound can also be used to determine the presence of atherosclerosis or the buildup of plaque on the walls of arteries. If a person has atherosclerosis, ultrasound can be used to measure the thickness of the plaque and estimate how much risk there is for an acute cardiovascular event such as a heart attack.
Ultrasounds can also be used to identify abnormalities or predictors that may indicate a future heart attack, such as elevated blood pressure or high cholesterol levels. And it can be used to evaluate the function of organs and tissues in the cardiovascular system, such as the heart muscle and blood vessels.
Another use for ultrasound is in emergency medicine. For example, an ultrasound can be used to diagnose bleeding from a major vein in emergencies when other tests, such as blood work, are not possible.
