No More Lead Aprons During X-Rays?

May 31, 2021

Patients who come to the Hollywood Diagnosticss Center, or any doctor’s office or medical facility for an X-ray are probably used to having a lead apron draped over them for safety. Studies show this might not be entirely necessary.

This shift in the guidelines was first brought up by the American Association of Physicists in Medicine and the American College of Radiology.

Studies have shown that shielding patients provides very little to no benefit. When a patient receives an X-ray, the only area covered on the body is the area necessary for the exam. The lead only protects you from the radiation outside of the body. When you receive an X-ray, a small amount of radiation goes to other areas of your body, but this occurs internally. Lead does nothing to block this radiation.

There had been previous concerns that radiation might damage cells that could be passed along to future generations, however, these concerns have never been proven by any medical studies to date. Because of this concern, lead shields were often placed over patients’ reproductive organs during medical imaging exams.

The good news is, as far as radiation use goes, since the 1950s, the amount of radiation used in medical imaging has decreased over 95%, and advances in imaging equipment now can produce quality images using small amounts of radiation.

According to the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, the presence of the lead apron can also impair the quality of Diagnostics tests.
