How do Ultrasounds Work?

An ultrasound is a safe and painless digital imaging technique used in the medical field. Its purpose is to create pictures of the inside of the body. These pictures are then used to cross-reference with the patient notes by the health care provider. The cool thing about an ultrasound, is that these images are being captured in real time. This means your blood flow and the movement of your organs are able to be tracked and analyzed. In this procedure, no radiation is going to be used whatsoever. An ultrasound is particularly useful in examining organs such as the liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, heart and blood vessels.

How to Prepare for an Ultrasound?

Prior to an ultrasound your doctor is going to be giving you instructions as to what you should be doing depending on the organ that is going to be scanned. Many studies require you to neither eat nor drink 12- 24 hours before the procedure. On the other hand, you may be required to ingest a larger portion of water prior to the exam. Regardless, most examination take around 30 minutes to complete.
