A positron emission tomography (PET) scan is a form of nuclear medicine imaging. By using a small amount of radioactive material, the procedure creates detailed 3D images of your tissues and organs. This test is primarily used to either detect cancerous areas, or inform the doctors whether is changes in the cancer.
Many PET scans are used in combination with computed tomography (CT) scans. What stands out in the PET scan is the radiotracer. This is the radioactive material that allows the scans to pick up cancerous areas. They are also used in scanning for heart disease and brain conditions
Steps Prior to the Scan
Before the scan your doctor is going to give you instructions to follow. Here are some guidelines:
- Follow a High Protein Diet – If you want to have vegetables, stick to broccoli and spinach. Otherwise, go with meats (red, chicken, fish), eggs, cheese. Avoid carbohydrates, sugar, alcohol, coffee, tea, milk and yogurt.
- Avoid Physical Strain – Don’t do any strenuous activity or cause yourself physical exertion.
- Take your daily medications
- Fast Prior to Exam – On the day of the PET Scan, make sure to fast for 4 hours prior to the examination.
