When Do You Need a Bone Density Scan and How Can it Help

Jul 25, 2022

A bone density scan, also known as DXA or Densitometry takes a series of x-rays to measure your bone density. There are a number of different types of bone density scans, but they all use the same basic principle by using x-rays, you can take a picture of any areas that have more minerals than usual in them.

This allows doctors to see how much bone mass you have and compare that to other people of your same sex and age. By seeing if there is any difference between your bones, doctors can tell if something is wrong and can start looking for the root cause.

Some common reasons why someone might need a bone density scan include: being underweight and or having low muscle mass due to an eating disorder or chronic illness. In other cases where patients are overweight and or have high muscle mass due to anabolic steroid abuse.

There are many reasons why you may need a bone density scan. If you have been diagnosed with osteoporosis, it is important to have regular scans done to monitor your progress. Even if you don’t have osteoporosis, getting a bone density scan can help you monitor the effects of medications on your bones. Bone density scans can also detect fractures early and help prevent further damage to your bones.

If you are experiencing any pain or discomfort in your bones, you should ask your doctor about having a bone density scan. This will help determine if there is an issue that needs to be addressed right away.
